Purpose of the role:
We are looking for confident, inspiring tutors with a passion for changing lives through learning.

Working with education coordinators, other tutors, volunteers, partners and community representatives, you will design and teach learning pathways that meet a range of student needs.

You are likely to adapt existing course materials to make them relevant to the aspirations of our student groups and wider communities. You will need to be flexible and dynamic as you support your learners` confidence to move into progression options including accredited courses, volunteering and work.

We work to engage students from across our area in online learning and develop in-venue programmes in communities.

In your covering letter, please specify which parts of the county you are happy to travel to.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop your career with the WEA and support our vision for 'A better world - equal, democratic and just; through adult education the WEA challenges and inspires individuals, communities and society.'

Key areas of responsibility:
- Plan, deliver and report on your courses, using methods and materials appropriate to the student group and course content (N.B preparation and reporting time is implicit in calculations of tutor remuneration);
- Create an appropriate and welcoming atmosphere for students;
- Provide appropriate student feedback and support and educational advice and information where necessary;
- Carry out the administrative tasks required for each programme area.
- Identify/assess the needs of students and if necessary adapt course content and delivery style to meet these needs;
- Comply with the WEA policy on Equality and Diversity so that all students are treated with respect and dignity in an environment in which a diversity of backgrounds and experience is valued. Deal with any harassment or discrimination issues that arise;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of learning and assess students` work;
- Offer advice on further learning and progression opportunities to students as required;
- Ensure that all required information is provided by students, collated and submitted in a timely way;
- Undertake continuing professional development required to maintain your professional status;
- Attend moderation and team meetings;
- Represent the WEA throughout the course;
- Support the development of, and recruitment to, local programmes in collaboration with the rest of the team.

As a Sessional Tutor you are required to carry out your duties in the context of the WEA`s policies and practices, particularly Equality and Diversity, Health and Safety and Data Protection, and those of any host organisations, including informing students of their obligations.

Our community learning courses follow the RARPA approach and we use a virtual learning platform, Canvas, for all courses, and Zoom for online courses. Training and support is provided.

About you:
Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate that they can meet the needs of people that may come with complex backgrounds, have low language/literacy skills, be digitally excluded and/or experience low confidence. We are looking for tutors that can recognise the strengths and potential of everybody and help their learners develop their own self-belief.

You will need a level 3 teaching qualification. We can look at equivalent qualifications and experience and provide advice if further training is needed. You will also need to be able to show you have the IT literacy to access training, join online meetings, manage course requirements and support students in using our learning tools.

We would like to know about your specialist areas and any qualifications you might have to teach or assess accredited courses. Particular subject areas we are looking for at the moment include: crafts, English/ESOL, maths, health & social care, ICT, mentoring, mental health, volunteering and adult teaching/training.
